wierd whining noise from gearbox - reappeared

i've noticed recently that i get a wierd whine that sounds like it's coming from the gearbox. it happens when it's really cold outside and when i pull through the gears it just pipes up with a bit of a 'whee' for about a second or so. it sounds like a child saying 'whee' and i thought it was my daughter in the back winding me up until this morning when she wasn't in the car! :)

as it's a bit intermittent and my car is so noisy, it's been hard to analise it more but it seems to be noticable in 2nd and 3rd at light throttle loadings and only for the first minute or so from cold

any ideas?

i have a E34 530 M30 manual gearbox in there btw

I'm getting a whining sound from across the dining table! Something about "can't you even eat your dinner without being on that !$$*!?* computer".

You need to sort that out. If you ignore it, it will become a dull droning sound until eventually all you'll hear is a sort of high-pitched shrieking noise.

At the moment all the different areas on my car are competing for 'who can make the most noise' awards..... Not sure if it's the diff or gearbox tbh. I think I'll ring the nice BMW mechanic who lives in sheffield. He will probably give me some fantastic news.....

i used to get that, now upon my return to single man bliss, i can use the dishwasher to clean parts, the oven to bake fresh paint and the kitchen worktop to rebuild differentials :D it's not all bad! :P

soooooo, after my flywheel bolts working loose at brands hatch, i pulled the gearbox off (obviously) to fix things and whie it was off, checked the ATF. the level was fine despite a very small leak on the output shaft (or shift knuckle seal) but it looked a little murky.

i drained it and refilled with nice new fresh ATF as it was out of the car (so much easier) and now it's whining again! it must just not like cold weather and thin new ATF :(

short of shoving sawdust in it, would using some thicker 'gear oil' harm it? it's designed for ATF (has the ATF label on it) but i wonder if some thicker oil might shut it up :) whatever is wrong has been like that for 2 or 3 years of daily abuse, two ring trips and a track day without getting any worse so i'm not expecting it to pop any time soon... touch wood!
