convert petrol to diesel

ive been looking for a diesel e30 for ages and cant find them easly

how hard is it to change a 2.5 petrol for a 2.5 diesel say from a e34 or a omega?

M3's run on diesel. Albeit not very well.

Can't say we've ever had a diesel conversion on here.

m51d25 would be a bit of a tight squeeze by the time you've got the turbo and intercooler fitted

i know in eurpoe they get turbo diesel e30s as i was trying to get one.
there just a bit rare over here .

If you're wanting to do it for economy, you'd be better-off going for LPG. :rock:

324d or 324 td´s arent that fuel efficient or fast like modern diesels, IMO it wouldnt really be worth it.

I'm waiting for someone to pioneer this! I can get modern BMW diesel engines easily and cheaply enough, but I want to make sure I'm not going down a dead end first.
The recent changes in road fuel tax rules have made this a much more attractive proposition, and I've plenty of land here to try growing biofuel crops.
Would be looking to run the domestic (oil fired) central heating on it, as well!

my dad was at me to diesel my baur he reckons the merc diesel engine will fit i know theres a few varients of the merc diesel engine so ill find out what one he was on about..

to let yous understand my old man is 63 and has put diesel engines into some cars that ppl would never dream of including mustangs, mk2 jaguars extra.. if there is away to diesel an e30 my old man will know it winkeye

My old man was like that 40+ years ago. He had a fleet of Humber Hawk taxis which he put BMC diesel engines in.

winkeye sounds like my dad aswell he used to run taxis that he used to convert to diesel some of the stuff hes converted scares me, best one was when he told my sis to convert her e28 m535 to diesel :eek:

If I was going to do a derv E30 (and I've been thinking about it a lot lately!), I think I'd go for one of the french lumps, or maybe the turbocharged perkins prima from a Montego or similar.

I was also thinking along the same lines as Brianmooore, as we are on oil fired heating - one fuel for car and house would be ideal!

BTW, even the most up to date common rail engines will run on biodiesel, it's the particulate filters that can't deal with it - apparently the soot produced is too "sticky" for the filters to process.

There was a post on here a while back showing the 6pot diesel in germany, only a few were ever made i seem to remember.

Mmm! Wonder if a little fumigation with LPG would sort that?
LPG is supposed to prolong the burn time and dramatically reduce particulates, if what I've read is correct.

biodiesel is great, but mechanics seem to hate it. The funny thing is that when you question them more closely they don't seem to have any specifics. The girlfriends Golf Diesel loves the stuff. Its a non turbo from 1995 so we're not exactly worried if it goes pop.

but you'd need to be doing about 15k a year to get the return to pay for it dependent on how long you'd be keeping the car for, as on LPG you return 20% less mpg than a conventional petrol engine so you need to build that into your calcs to see if its worth doing.

I was getting quotes for that sort of money. I ended-up buying a kit and DIYing it. Came out at less than £800.
I calculate that I've already saved over £350 in 4k miles and 4 months.

For an E30!!!! I'd expect the car to be included as well at that price, and a good one at that!

That's the problem really. I would love to fit a 120 or 123 lump in one of my cars, but the cost of the motor (even with me working for them) and the cost of the conversion would require me to drive the car till I was about 342 years old to break even! LPG is a good bet till the government realise that everyone is using it and cut the subsidy. Even then the cost of the LPG conversion isn't cheap, and you still have the insurance issue if it's not a recognised fitment. Cheaper to buy a cheap oilburner, run it for a year, flog it on, and so on. Keep the E30 for nice weather.

well the subsidy (or very low tax on LPG) is to remain at this rate till 2010 then you'll see it rocket!

Do you think that If I converted my car to run off methane created by my own copious intake of beans and cabbage, and routed to the engine via an ingenious seat-mounted-breather pipe, that the govenment would have a crack (excuse the pun) at taxing that too? :eek:

Yes, it would be illegal to use it unless you pay the road fuel duty appropriate for it, which I expect would be that for CNG - about 4p (+ VAT) per litre, IIRC.
Might be out of date here, on second thoughts, as the duty on 'home produced' eco fuels was removed by the government a couple of months ago.
