Bmw recomend using SAE 80 or single grade mineral based engine oil . Has anybody used 75w-90 synthetic with the same API GL4 specification as Bmw recomend. Ive heard of people changing from single grade to multi grade in manual discovery's resulting in a much improved all round performance.

75w-90 synth will be fine, as will DextronII ATF (the same as the power steering). The later is often used to cure a gearbox which has a still gearchange when cold.
