Most PS systems make some noise when on full lock, or early if cold. just check the fluid level, make sure there are no leaks and that the belt is tight.

the belt that drives power steering pump (at the bottom of the motor) is crank driven. look at the bottom of the front of the motor for a small pump with two large rubber hoses coming from it. make sure that it's not too loose. Make sure the pie/segmented reservoir on the left hand side of the car near to the brake servo is full and that the fluid is still clean (reddish).
