They might let the oil drain back into the sump when the engine is stopped, causing oil starvation for a few seconds on each start up.

They cost about 3 quid from GSF. Might work, but will be a very- bad-thing if it doesn't, & is it really worth it? You could check part numbers on GSF / ECP though I s'pose!

they look like they have similar valves in them tho. i worked at a unipart based garage few years back, im sure the bm and vw filters like these had same unipart part no. just wondered if anyone had any knowledge on using these vw ones.
the two filters i have are for our lasses mk2 golf driver. wont be changing the oil on it again cus its knackard anyway, will be getting an 1800 in it soon to rep. 1600 thats in it, maybe power steering too if i can get a full used kit.

why are you guys even answering the question? What sort of retard and you have to be one to even think about posting it, asks this when an oil filter is £3 from gsf, if your that hard up you shouldn't be running a car

No I agree completely, for the sake of £3 is it worth the effort pressing the keys to ask?

jesus you ask a simple question and you get shot down in flames. so its a no i guess....... im not hard up for cash, but 3 quid is 3 quid. but it costs nothing to ask does it???????????

Don't take offence murran, but the guys are making a valid point (although not in a subtle way). For the sake of a few pounds, its better to have the exact filter. You will find that original BMW filters from the main dealers are very reasonably priced and can be as cheap as the aftermarket ones.

but why ask the question ffs? it's like saying can i use the fanbelt off an 1.1 D reg fiesta on my 325 as it looks like it will fit

in the instance, to be fair... if it looks the same, it probably is! just one of the standard size Gates (or similar) belts
if the part numbers for the filters match up between both cars (the GSF site is handy for comparing bits as they list the part numbers) then i'd use them. if not, it's hardly worth the risk.

its not a daft question to ask IMO as alot of filters are interchangeable between different models.
its just a shame that in this case they do not !

for your info the part nos. dont match up on gsf web site, or ecps. but an oil filter is very simple it has a filter element in it and a one way valve in it to hold oil in the gallerys when the engines not running. its no more complicated than that!!! but i agree its not worth the risk for 3 quid.......
and if a fan belt off a 1100 fiesta is the same size and width then whack it on!

i had years ago when i first passed my test a 1000 nova trip, i put a front anti roll bar on it but it only just fouled the oil filter at the front so i put a shallow volvo 440 oil filt. on it, it fitted seal in the same place same center thread. and i did bout 10000 miles in it and no damage......

i dont know you but i've seen you contribute many valuable posts over the time including answering some of the less intelligent questions i have asked over the last couple of years that i have been reading the zone.
i actually saw this thread the second you replied with the retard comment and thought it a little OTT.
Many Many filters have more than one application and when yuou get to know the codes the thread type, capacity and the ones with and without return valves you learn it is also possible to use a filter in a vehicle it is not listed for.. We dont all have the money to restoring beautiful alpinas no matter how hard we have to work for it. If someone want to save themselves a few pounds by using their head and not wasting money needlessly then fair play.
To call them a retard for doing so i find hard to understand. what is it that has insensed you so much about this question??!!
How unfortunate this is the type of place where it is seems appropriate and even commended.

just cus im so insensed by the responce to my simple question and to pi55 simon13 off........ im goin to fit my vw filter tomorrow! but before i do im goin to fit my oil pressure guage and check my oil pressure and take note of how long it takes to build up pressure when started and the running pressure at tick over and fast idle before and after fitting said vw filter.............

Reasonable question me thinks. Might only be £3, but for some of us, a trip to the shed, is a lot quicker than a trip to the local motor factors.

Also saving petrol. Helping the environment too.

its still got a one way valve in...... anyway at work this morning once id done the front discs and pads and checked levels and tyre pressures on the mk4 golf 130 gt tdi that was booked in. i started on mine........ put pressure guage on it....... pressure on idle when hot 24 psi, reaches this in about a second after it fires up, left it sat 10 mins then tryed it again was still about a second, fast idle (ie 2500revs) its 50psi+. changed oil with vw quantum 10w40 semi symphthetic oil (borrowed from work stock) and fitted my vw filter

. intially pressures were a touch higher but of course engine was cooler, but once warm pressures were the same, did same starting test and it didnt take any longer to get idle pressure than before......
conclusion vw mk2 golf oil filters are fine on your 320i touring, so if youve got one laying about along side your fiesta 1100d fan belt you may aswell fit them both.......

useful to know, means if your stuck for a filter for any reason you have some hope of using an alternative one.

its still got a one way valve in......
Its a long time ago i went to collage , but i was told that the valve in an oil filter is a pressure bypass valve , if the filter gets blocked it will bypass so the engine will maintain full oil pressure , it may be different on a vw filter as it seams to good on your car .
