Can anyone help a new 318is owner - H Reg.

Central locking sometimes fine other times not!

Symptoms when not working - I can turn the key in the drivers dook lock back and forward - no resistance , plastic pin does not move up or down and slight whirring/clonk from drivers door. Passenger door lock and boot do not work.

I come back an hour or two later and its all fine! Then a day or two later not working!

Is this some mechanical prob in the doorlock or the famous blak/red wire thing I've read about a lot on here!

I'm pretty good mechanically, but not so hot on electrics - I can do a bit of soldering!

Black/red wire thing for a start, but also the mechanical linkage in the driver's door is worn/needs adjustment. This doesn't show when the locking is working, as the motor does the job for you.

in the drivers side footwell......... behind the speeker panel there is the central locking control unit.....

on my car this seized up. so nothing would open with the central locking.... and it made a very wierd noise....... i took it out and hit it with a screwdriver and now it works fine....

Thanks a lot will try this. Any tips about what to take off and what to examine on the doors mechanical linkage?
