m10 318i idle sitting at 5oo rpm when engine is warm

As per the subject, any idea's on whats wrong! Car sometimes nearly stalls with revs sitting that low. I get the warning lights come on dimly sometimes as car almost stalls even with clutch fully in!
Could it be idle control valve maybe?! If so hoe easy to fix or replace!? or could it be something else?! Am getting bored of holding a few revs on at traffic lights!!!

can anyone point me in the direction of how to solve the low idle issue?! even to technical info which I can read up on!

ICV is expensive so check simple things first air filter, plugs, fuel filter, rotor arm all normal service items once you have performed a good service and routine check then you can start looking a little deeper. Also if you search for idle problems there are probably hundreds of threads to read through.

All sorted, seems throttle cable has slightly stretched so a tweek of the screw to tighten the cable and normal idle level has been resumed!!!

No! No! No! Throttle cable has nothing to do with the idle speed, other than if you set it too tight it will obviously make it idle higher. All you are doing is introducing another fault to mask an existing fault.
Idle speed is controlled solely by the engine ECU, via the idle control valve.
Slacken the throttle cable off, check that the throttle stop screw is set exactly where it was when the car left the factory, and then check the throttle position switch is working exactly as intended.

is an m10 not carb, meaning the carb will control the idle speed?

Also says M10 lol Surely a 318i would be an M40? he can decide anyway lol we're both right ;)

318i m10 is an L-jetronic injection 1766cc engined car, it is not an m40.
M10's don't have Idle Control Valves, they have air slide valves. It is next to the valve cover with one electrical connection and another vacuum hose. Clean it with a bit of carb cleaner.
I recon it is the big bellow from the AFM to the throttle, take it off and check it very carefully for cracks - you can not do this properly in situe.
