check for exhaust leaks just incase its that coming up through. do you have high fuel consumption? this could indicate a leak, ideally put it up on a ramp or get underneathe and check for drips from the lines and the tank, look for stains aswell. also just eyeball the filter , if not take it to a garage , its not worth getting blown up ! Sounds exactly like how mine smelt a few weeks ago. My fuel tank was leaking. May not be this if you say its only after its warmed up, but check your tank out for leaks, pay particular attention to the fuel filler neck on the offside, they are prone to rusting through there. Bit of a tricky job to replace the tank, about 4 hours work

Not the end of the world though

Check the fuel lines in the engine bay for cracking and weeping. As this could be very dangerous

Check the fuel lines in the engine bay. Had a similar problem recently and found petrol dripping onto the start motor soleniod. Not a good thing...

Does it splash a bit of fuel near the rear right wheel when you fill it up to the brim?

hi guys, thanks for the advice...
It's a 89 325i sport...
it doesnt splash any fuel out when i full tank it...
Fuel consumption seems to be ok i think...get about 175 miles from a full tank of £40
will check the above as advised...
thanks again...

you must have a heavy right foot, I get that from £30...check your fuel lines its a common fault

My 2.7 does around 400 miles on a full tank, the 316i touring gives off a petrol smell when full,I am thinking fuel filler pipe for this one,the O/S of the tank has a stain at the rear end. There was a thread by a guy how was offering exchange filler pipes...but er indoors uses it most days..

Hi guys, just got a fuel line replaced in the engine...was cracking up...will have to see how it goes...
Could a bad fuel line cause rev problems when the car is idle...i.e. reving up & down on its own???
Cheers...
