hey can anyone help,
i have really bad scoring at full lock, it sounds like a belt maybe,
ive looked online , and hear a lot about the PAS pump and belt, could it be rubbing?
whatever it is it doesnt sound nice.
can anyone give me any ideas, gonna get some ramps and have a look at the weekend, to further investigate.

just got the car its a 318i touring on a K plate, i think its on 15" Alpine style rims,

thanks

A number of members have reported rubbing from the front wheels on full lock after installing offset(M3 pattern) front whisebone bushes. Some have mentioned the ARB,others, like myself, the tyre tread catches the wheelarch liner.

Hi I would try a fluid and belt change especially if the fluid is brown in colour.

PS welcome

I have this same noise. The PAS didnt have a belt on it last week and on full lock didnt make this noise. I have since put a belt on and on full lock standing or moving it makes the noise. Hope this helps as I think its the belt tension mate.

ok been covered before.... you should NEVER have your steering on full lock for more then a FEW seconds, the noise you hear is the power steering pump pushing fluid against a locked hyraulic system, (as your steering rack is on the stops) thus the pressure builds up and either:
1. leaks fluid through the box or pump or pipes
2. screaches as the belt cannot turn the pump and slip on the pulleys
3. groans as the pump is being turned by the tight belt and is struggling against the pressure. (your case)

so basically its very bad for your power steering pump, it will eventually damage it.

Erm...^^^probably explains why the 316i touring needed a rack change this 'summer',I have a difficult entry to the drive that needs full lock,I expect that 'er indoors is holding it on.....cannot possibly be me....
