Hi all, my 325i se saloon has just reached 101,000 miles, she doesn't seem to be handling as well as she used to be. I've heard the shocks my need replacing around this sort of mileage, will i also have to replace the springs? Thanks. Scott :)

You need to get it checked out bud. Get it on a ramp and see what's happening. Don't assume it's your shocks, it could be your bushes for example.
How long have you had your car? Do you know if any of the suspension parts have been replaced before you bought it?

I've never heard of having to replace the shocks or springs at a specific mileage :?

Iam gonna get her up on a ramp this Sunday, i've had the car for 2 years now, bought the car from my bro and she just had 69,000miles on her then. I used to do alot of motorway mileage in my last job. I think i've read an article in Total BMW or BMW Car saying u my need to replace shocks after 100,000 miles? Thanks for the info bud.

Agree with Pal here strongly. Age will also have taken its toll on the the dampers and springs. However, I don't know the age of your car but as a saloon even if she is one of the latest cars she will now be 16 years old. All the rubber will have started to perish at that age.

Your shocks and springs are only really three quarters of the suspension set up. A general splitting, cracking and/or hardening in all the rubber components from the aging process will induce a lot of extra flex and roll and will reduce traction as well. Just because the bushes pass an MOT doesn't mean they are still doing their job properly.

Check Rear rubber mountings, Trailing link rubber and especially anti roll bar link arms and mountings. Also Rear top mounts don't have to be knocking to be to be shagged.

Front end check anti roll bar rubber and front strut top mounts. Also control arm bushes will add to any flex.

The whole suspension ages - bushes, dampers etc all go soft and useless.
