PROBLEM - the starter motor works fine, turns the engine and the plugs are new but the engine just doesnt fire up

. Its done it a few times recently but then started on the second turn of the key as normal, but not toda. The engine turns on the starter but doesnt fire up

. I have taken the fuel hose off which goes from the filter to the head and tried starting the engine, no fuel spurts out so i am suspecting the fuel pump is the cullprit, its a 318i!
If anyone has any advice or can shed some light on the situation then please do as im already having withdrawl symptons from driving and i dont know how long ill last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sounds like you answered your own question.
Beofre changing the fuel pump though I'd try the fuel pump relay.

have u got an imobiliser on it??? you could be switching it off thinking that ist off .. could be a faulty relay within the imobiliser not closing the "fuel pump cut" side of the wiring... might be worth a look.

oh right. sometimes though even turning them off at the key dosn't work. espeshly if its an old alarm. all that salt and heat over the years dosn't do them any good. try and get hold of a meter to see if theres continuity across the imobilser cuts of the fuel wires and the feed to the fuel pump. also try running a live but "fused" wire from the battery to the fuel pump or to the relay.
i had the same problem on my very old E21 323i. sombody botched a i think MOSS alarm onto it . i spent a whole w/end messing round and it was the alarm. that was 10 years ago, but i never forgot to try this first before splashing out on a new fuel pump / relay.
