oil leak

I took my e30 (1989 316 1.6L) in for it's MOT last week and it failed on a few things so it's back in for the work to be done on Tuesday. When they had it up on the ramp I was being noisy and noticed a leak coming from what I assume to be the gearbox, although (having owned mostly 4x4s in the past) it looked a bit like a front differential. Basically it was a box sticking down behind the engine. It had a bit of oil dripping from it. The mechanic said it was engine oil and if I kept an eye on the level it'd be fine, but that if I felt the clutch slipping I should bring it back in.
He also priced up the repair which was more than £100 for replacing the seals, because he would have to take the gear box out or something (i apologise for my ignorance).
Firstly i'm not sure that it is engine oil. On my 4x4s each diff had oil in it and if you don't change it or if it leaks the diff starts to whine and has to be replaced.
Is the mechanic correct? Should I just leave it and take it in if you clutch slips?
