Yes the E28 diff's fit into E30's - all you need to do is swap over the back plate

E28 535 LSD doesn't fit E30. It's double the size of E30 big LSD 8O

E28 "small LSD" (all other E28 than 535 and M5) fits by changing the back plate.

All z3 coupes have LSD as standard. Not sure that they fit E30 but i've a feeling that they fit. They have also the cooling fins on their back-plate.

I'd say they'd definitely fit as in fairness they have the same rear axle as an E30. Z3M bushes fit on the E30 diffs too so theres no reason why one wouldn't just bolt on :D

AFAIK, 2.8 Z3s have Torsen LSDs as standard.
The one I bought (£40!!) definitely is, and fits straight into an E30 without modification.
The one I have doesn't have the finned backplate, and, AFAIK, only came on the Z3M.
Ratio is 3.15:1

whats a torsen diff as i went to see 1 the other day and as i turned the input shaft and held 1 of the outputs, the other output turned and this isnt possible on my standard e30 lsd
so is that torsen?
oh and thanks for the help lads

Torsen diffs work in a different way to clutch pack type LSDs, and can't be identified by the methods that work for those. You need to open it up; then you can see all the helical gears.
A conventional LSD would 'fight back' against modern traction control systems.
(Torsen = torque sensitive).

kinda feel abit silly now as i went to buy a z3 2.8 diff the other day and as i did what i thought was the right test i didnt buy and acused the guy of time wasting

so am i right in thing if you turn the input, both outputs turn in same direction then its a lsd?

I couldn't see any way of identifying a Torsen LSD from the outside. I could only confirm what it was by taking off the cover.
