AIR CON PROBLEM

hi guys!
lately i've been smelling the exhaust fumes of the cars infront of me. i think my vents are working properly for when i push the yellow button (circulate) i can hear the vents closing.
what could be the problem? could it be that there's an unsealed opening in my firewall where exhaust fumes creep in?
thanks!

Holes in the bulkhead usually result in wet carpets, so if they are dry, I doubt if this is the problem.
Take the large inspection cover off at the rear of the engine bay and visually check the operation of the vent flaps.

thanks for the reply!
no wet carpets for me though!
by the way, the cover draped on my firewall is falling apart and i've noticed that bits of it are spewed off my aircon vents

actually got into my eye once. it could be a tell tale sign that my flap's aren't working
if this is the case, how do i resolve it?

The cover is made of sheet steel. Can't possibly be cracked!

okay. i was probably referring to the insulator (the black one) that covers the splash wall
