E30 Zone

Basickly on Saturday i was drivin on tha moterway and my car start over heating ALOT. So i stopped and let it cool down, then carried on but it hapend again straight away.

Opened the bonnet and it was pure steam everywhere. I then called the RAC who took me home and he had a quick look and said the water pumps gone... (the fan was loose as well)

I got a mechanic too check it today and he said the water pumps gone as well. SO i got that replaced from him a hour ago, we were still there and it CARRIED on over heating. After ages even after taking the thermostat off it carried on doing the same thing.

hes told me that the head gasket is gone. Is there anything else that could be gone?

because if thats the case then :(:(:(:

WHAT ENGINE!!! We're not physic!
The head gasket may have gone, the engine could be air locked, the engine could be totally fubarred.
You admit you've overheated it twice. The damage was done then. All you've done so far is sorted the cause, not the effect.

signes of head gasket failuer will be having mayo like substance in your oil (remove oil cap and see there) and/or having oil mixed with your water (check were you top your water up)

not necessarily - depends on what part of the gasket has failed.
If it's just gone through a fire ring into the water jacket, it will just blow the coolant out without affecting the oil in any way.

Sorry to say if it's an M20 theres a good chance it could be a crack in the head along the camshaft journals, I've had this experience not nice but managed to pick up a good used one.

In the same way that a head gasket failure doesn't necessarily affect the oil, a cracked cam journal will mix oil and water, but won't pressurise the system and blow out the water, or immediately affect the running of the engine in any way.
Of course, it can have cracked cam journals AND a blown gasket. Very likely so, if its a M20B25.

:D:D:D - its fixed lool, he said there was too much air in tha engine, he let it out and kept filling it up with water now its not over heating any more !! im so happy lol

What sort of mechanic changes the water pump, and then doesn't bleed the cooling system?
If there really is nothing more wrong with it, you have been VERY lucky!

brian, ive had a similar experience. My m20 1989 325i is off the road!!! she started to overheat but i stopped before it went into the red. I ended up being towed by the rac.

i changed the thermostat and bled the coolant (it was full of oil). i put new coolant in and it seemed to do the trick. when i bled the thermostat housing finally mayo came out then water. There is also plenty of water in the oil.

I dont want to run her again until it can be sorted. What do you think? I wondered if it would the excess pressure when she got hot blowing the gasket ( i really don't know )

Is it worth just getting a re-con head fitted? do you know of any reputable specialists or garages i could contact. Any help would be most appreciated.

Classic signs of a head cracked under the cam bearings, I'm afraid!
Get the car up to temperature and the cooling system up to pressure and remove the rocker cover.
With the engine running you may be able to see beads of water emerging from under one of the two rearmost cam bearings.
