if its top end it must be the tappets...you say you have done a recent oil change, have you used oil that is too thick/thin for the engine?

also why did you adjust the tappets? were they making noise before?

the oils ok i think, the owner before me had run it on this for for a few years.the tappets were noisy before and when the engine is warm is runs lovley and sounds good. i used the guide from the zone to get the correct settings. i thought that it might be the injectors, is this pos?

3rd thread on this subject in the last fortnight,

You are not alone , 4 other M20 owners have experienced an increase in engine noise after an oil change.

The injectors are pretty noisy - to rule them out, rev the engine to a high speed and kill the ignition. If all goes quiet, the injectors are the likely culprits.

FYI tapping could still be the tappets (adjusting them may not eliminate the noise completely and new oil ma have worsened the noise), or worn camshaft, or injectors or loose exhaust or intake gasket.

Same here i thought i had a noisy tappet turned out to be broken studs on number 1 exhaust manifold causing it to blow until warm looking forward to fixing that
