Is my petrol tank f00ked?

I filled the car up last week, and I mean right to the brim I was joggling it and all sorts to try and make any air expel to get as much petrol in as possible. (Looking back I dont know why I did that actually)
Anyway, for the next few days there was a strong smell of petrol in and around the car and it looking like it was leaking near the petrol tank.
Once the petrol ran down a bit the smell has died and now is non existant, I used all the petrol and filled it halfway this morning and everything was fine.
I'm guessing theres either a hole right at the top of the tank or filler tube neck or theres some sort of over flow jobby fitted and this is normal but I think thats a bit optimistic.
Any ideas?

The most common places for a leaking tank are the area around the filler inlet and the rubber seal for the internal fuel pump (or sender unit)
Edit: And the transfer pipe in the middle of the tank.

Filler neck on the tank tends to corrode, its a common problem.
Only really noticable when filled above half way, sounds like thats your problem!

just had my tank done, it went around the seam where the "lid" attached to the tank.
Totally rusted.

Mine is exactly the same.
I filled it last week right to the top and it dripped petrol out all over the underside of the car, and smelt strongly.
I removed half the tank and the smell has gone.
I will take it to a garage for a new tank/filler, whatever it needs. Will get the fuel lines repaced at the same time!

same problem with mine. corroded around the little bit of pipe thats on the tank that the rubber filler neck pipe attaches to. temp repair with a silicon pipe, sealer and a jubilee clip will do until i get around to fitting the new fuel tank i bought from ECP for about £90ish as i believe the prop need dropped to change the tank.because of my set up i also need to remove the driveshafts, diff and exhaust

Fuzzy you will definately have to remove the exhaust/propshaft
No need to remove the diff tho.
Unless its a non BM one
Suggest you replace the original pipe clips with jubilee clips.
Makes things soooooo much easier
