1986 320i Coupe E30 M20 Restoration Questions

Had this car since new, 160,000 miles on the clock, original clutch, only failed to start once in 21 years (fuel pump relay - tap with a screwdriver got us home) and never failed an MOT. Faithful family car handed down to my daughter and now my son. Splendid behaviour.
However, it's been kept going by me, welders and Thermogasket (for a blown gasket/cracked head problem) and is now in the garage for a well earned restoration.
I would very much appreciate your advise on a number of things.
What is the most suitable MIG welder for auto work?
I need to do the bodywork before tackling the engine. The oil is like gravy and the water is oily. What is the best way to lay up the engine to prevent further damage?
I usually support the car on four ramps which gives me adequate clearance under the car and is fine as long as the wheels don't have to come off. This begs the question - where is the best place to get some tall axle stands?
The whole of the rear suspension has to come off - the crossmember has been welded and needs replacing - where do I support the rest of the chassis safely?
My son wants to lower the rear suspension slightly, so what shocks and springs would you recommend?
What steamer would you recommend for cleaning all the parts?
What's the best underbody treatment before putting it all back together?
Will keep you posted with updates and pics on my progress and thanks to all the contributors for a really inspirational forum. I mean, if a guy can strip down and restore the back end of a 325 out in the open under an Argos gazebo, I've got no excuses!
Thanks
Andy
