can anybody shed some light as to why my gear stick can move almost a full circle within the housing and is there a easy method to fix this problem? just that its bloody annoying when you go for third and hit first.

Worn gearstick bushings. Happens to all e30's. To fix the problem just get a short shift kit, you'll be laughing.

have a look at
http://www.e30zone.net/modules.php?name ... echnz3.htm it lists all the parts you need to replace to get a nice "non wobbly" shift again, short shifter is an extra option while your at it

dude only way is the short shift! replace the bushes etc
big choice is the 1.9 short shift or the 2.8/3.0 (i cant remember

) from the z3?
i had the 1.9 and lost it now so i may go for the 2.8/3.0?
1.9 is the great not too short or heavy.

I had a 2.8 - it's kind of cool but it actually slows you DOWN if anything and isn't that pleasent to use day to day.. If I were to go again it would be 1.9 for sure.

Short shift kit does not make gear changes any quicker. Transmission determines the speed of the gear change. It can feel quicker though. However, it gives better feeling in changes so thats a good reasonf for do it. Do not make too short or it will heavy to change.

Does the Z3 shifter (1.9) sit any lower in the center console or is it just the length past the ball joint that changes?
And does anyone have a link to a guide on replacing those bushes that are worn, making the shifter sloppy?
