Wheel fitting?

I have tried a search on the forum to no avail. I would like to know what wheel sizes, (4 stud) will fit on the e30 (specifically my touring). I know about as much as 15" as in diameter, but hear offset and spacers etc being mentioned and frankly dont understand it. Is there anyone willing to break down what sizes fit straight on, and which need spacers long studs etc. Or at least give me an idea what it all means aka - 6x17 et15 4x108 - i have no idea what all that means, or whether it would fit on my car.

4x100 means 4 stud holes spaced 100mm apart (measured diagonally)
7x15 = 7" wide, 15" diameter
and the offset is as described in diagam below

The standard fitting on a 15" BBS wheels is 7x15, 4x100 ET15.
Most 7" wide wheels will fit straight on ie 7x15, 7x16 or 7x17 with an offset of et15 without any rubbing. The problem is that not many wheels available with the correct offset for the E30. As an example I am using 7x17 wheels with an offset of ET40 with 20mm spacers which brings the offset down to ET20 which is close enough to the standard fitment and gives me a little extra clearance from the wheel arch.
This is why the Azev A and Alpina reps are so popular as they have the correct offset for the E30.

I believe the standard offset on 15" BBS wheels is ET23, not ET15.

Standard offset on 15" BBS is ET 24 and 14" BBS is ET30.
16" BBS was ET27 !!

the offset (as shown by the excellent diagram from Greeny) is not constant, but varies with wheel width.
So the 14" BBS wheel from BMW, which is 6.5 inches wide, has a bigger offset to keep the centre of the 6.5 inches directly underneath the load point of the suspension.
BMW Bottletops 6jx14h2 et35
BMW BBS 6.5j x 14h2 et30
BMW BBS 7j x 15h2 et24
Hartge 7.5j x 16h2 et25
You can go 5mm either way without issue, and sometimes a lot more, but to ensure you don't get any rubbing does depend on what tyre widths you fit.

There are plenty of cars which use 4x100 studs (some older VWs, vauxhalls etc.) but they all tend to have offsets of about 35 so you would need to use spacers to clear the calipers, this also means longer wheels bolts. The good thing about BBs etc. is that they sit nice and wide in the arches. Decent hubcentric spacers which have the correct size flange in the middle to extend where the hub sits and centre the wheel are a must and not cheap so go for some wheels which were made for the car eg BBs Alpina reps, azevs, borbets, ats cups etc. If you're buying new wheels from Helfrauds for example, they can usually be supplied in any offset you desire.

AFAIK the following wheels will fit (but may need spacers)-
Volvo
Golf Mk2
Honda Civic 4 stud
Rover 200 / 25
There may well be others, too...
