steering noise

Hi,

Can anyone help me diagnose my 325i motorsport cab?

There's noise - a kinda gentle growl/buzz - coming from the front end when I put either lock on the steering, stationary or at very low speed. At first I thought it was an ok sound but it's getting louder and now I reckon something's up! Also, I've heard a couple of 'knocks' - not very loud - when steering full lock left when starting out from cold.

At higher speeds, i.e., all cornering over 20mph, there's no noise.

Any pointers would be much appreciated,

Happy Bank Holiday,

S

Checked the level of the steering fluid? Sounds like it could be low and drawing in air.

Ok. I'll check it in the morning. Thanks for the swift response man - almost as speedy as the cab :)

Check the fuild then check the tightness on the belt you don't want it to tight or it will slowly f**k the bearing up.Have you lubed the steering universal joints?what colour is the fuild should be nice and red.Mine was a browney colour changed the fuild made some difference.

Just brought a 325IS now im use to a 316i had it for years the stearing does seam heavy then the 1.6i is this due the the weight on the front end the steering doesn't seem to castor back as fast on the 2.5i?Cheers JayB

Hi,

Sorry it's taken me ages to get back. YES! I checked the steering fluid - which was low - topped-up and that completely sorted the problem. Silent steering once more :)

So, in short, nice one Brianmoooore!

Thanks again,

S

Hopefully you have a small leak on the bottom of the fluid bottle where the return hose connects. Otherwise start saving for a new rack!
