318i cab 1994 ticking noise when accelerating

Hi,

Car started to tick this morning under acceleration. The oil was changed only last week. It's only done a genuine 41k & just has its 4th service.
I think it may be a tappet sticking. Should I ignore it as the engine can't be worn & hope it sorts itself out or give it another oil change ?
The car has spent very long periods of time not being used & I wondered if this would have gummed up a tappet ?

Any help appreciated. :(

Cheers

Peter

do a search on spray bar? Or am I getting my engines mixed up.

Also if you have time (and in any case if you are planning on keeping the car), drop the oil sump out and look for bolts in the oil. The M40 engine has an 'inner' sump which also bolts to the engine. On 3 M40s that I know for sure, the inner bolts worked loose and drop into the sump - this means the oil take-up can allow air to be drawn up into the oil pump, rather than the expected oil.

This is a 'bad' thing.

Found out what the noise is - leaking exaust manifold. The car is suffering from lack of use in the past. Some years it has only done a few hundred miles. I've put 1000 miles on her in the last month - all with a big grin on my face and I'm running into lack of use problems. The sticky roof is getting better too. Because the mileage is so low the previous owners didn't want to use it. Just goes to show these car are best used rather than sat in a heated garage. I've got the infamous sticky tacho issue too. Changed the 3v batteries on the SI board - still sticks - but is getting better as the weather warms up. Any idea on how much the manifold gasket will cost to replace ? Cheers Pete 8)

Manifold gasket - easy to do, Not expensive. DIY jobby, just dont snap off the bolts, or its a whole world of pain. Look on Eurocar parts for a price on the gasket. Did mine last year, hour or two, not long.

1993 Lux Cab.

Thanks - Does anyone have the URL for an online diagram of the manifold & gasket. My local garage said there are two gaskets, an upper & lower ??

Cheers

Hi DaveD, I'd be interested in this "how-to" guide, too.
