vibration from front at all speeds?

i have a vibration from the front like a wheel bearing on its way out but when i jack up the wheels there is no play when i try to wiggle the wheels.is there another way of telling if its the wheel bearing? i know my steering rack is on its last legs and has fluid leeking from the gaitors but would this cause a vibration as described? there is no play in any ball joints as all have been replaced including droplinks. it does seem to vibrate more when turning left which also suggests the wheel bearing. opinions please?

Burger Kings - BK's - Alpina reps
Popadoms - Crunchy things sold at indian restaurants usually before your meal. Slighly off round and not flat.

Burger Kings= BK racing, model 171, AKA 17" alpina reps, as found on Fuzzy's touring.
As for your issue Fuzzy,
could be balljoints on track control arms,?
I changed rack and pump on the touring to get rid of vibrationa and grinding noise, made no difference....

I had exactly the same problem. just had it repaired, the following was needed,
wish bones
anti-roll link arms
bushings
steering joint assay, the rubber cup may be worn down feeling a shimmy in the wheel
only way to tell is get underneath!

the wishbones and arb drop links have been done. i would have thought the bushes would give a knocking noise rather than a constant vibration and noise relative to the wheel speed. the steering rack is knackered though but im not sure if that would result in the noise and vibration experienced either. ill have a closer look tomorrow

Wheels aren't off centre somehow are they? Or just loose?
Weight hasn't flown off and killed a passer-by?

I wonder if the extra layer of paint you've recently added to the wheels might have put them off balance? Or maybe you knocked a weight off when you were painting them? Have you only had this problem since spraying them?

Fuzzy, a friend of mine had similar symptoms on his Scirocco. A constant thumping vibration that increased with road speed and got worse when turning right.(It eventually got so bad it would shake whole car). We assumed it was left front wheel-bearing, but like you when we jacked-up car could not feel any play in bearing or roughness when wheel was rotated. To cut a loooong story short (after changing gearbox, driveshaft, CV-joints) I persuaded him to take hub from my old Scirocco and fit it, and you know what? It WAS the fuckin' bearing, all the months of pissing about just because we couldn't feel any wear or movement when moving it by hand. The front wheel-bearings on the E30 and Scirocco are similar in that they are all one piece, with both inner and outer bearings in a sleeve with a spacer between them. Maybe this prevents you from feeling any play when it's jacked-up but with the car's weight on it the wear shows up.

Fuzzy,I'm inclined to say it is almost certainly your bearing, mine is worn at the minute, and there is no play in it either.
If you jack up the front of your car, take both wheels off and spin both sides alternativly you'll notice a differnce, has to be with the wheels off though,it's not always noticable with them still on.
There really isn't much else to cause to vibration there.
