Leaking Shock Absorber

I noticed about 6 months ago that my rear left shock absorber was leaking, so I decided to replace it. Once it was in, all was well. I noticed again at the weekend while I was doing some work on the brakes, that this shock absorber is now leaking as well. What causes shock absorbers to leak?

If the travel of the shock absorber is not true/parrallel, it will cause the seals to fail.

Yes, it is the correct one. It's exactly the same as the one on the right side. Car is a 318i, standard suspension setup, with 195/50 15 inches. Other than that, all is standard...

No, not the tracking. i mean the path the shock travels through, or more to the point, has the bottom shock mounting point had any damage, causing it to be out of line.

No damage since I've owned the car. Can it not be attributed to worn top shock mounts or other worn suspension bushings?
