Replacing Water Pump and Timing Belt

I did this job last weekend on an E30 325i, never worked on these cars before and it was very straightforward.
No need to worry about things moving a little once the belt is off, just check the marks are there on the cam and crank pulleys to line everything back up to TDC when you put the new belt on and turn the engine over a few times by hand before starting up to check it's all ok

When you come to do tis task, you will discover that there are engraved timing marks on the cam pulley and the front of the cylinder head.Similar marks are to be found on the crank pulley and block casting.Turn the engine using a 22mm socket/spanner on the front of the crank, until both sets of marks line up.After fitting the new belt, turn the engine over in the same way, checking that the marks still line up.There is a step by step guide in both Haynes and Bentley. The professional mechanics will suggest changing the water pump at the same time, this seems to me to make sense if you are paying for labour.
