he got it trailered home and once home, he says it wont start up. it just cranks over trying to fire up and nothings happening??

also cant hear the fuel pump buzzing underneath the car?

checked fuses and relays... they are fine.

what else could it be??

Usual procedure - bridge out 30 and 87 of the fuel pump relay, and check for fuel at the fuel rail. Check for sparks.

Check battery, or jump start it.

Other day my Tourer wouldn't start (out of the blue), flattened the battery trying.

Then bump started it, and it fired straight up. Took it on a long run to charge battery, now its fine! :?

tried that Ian, used my polo to help him

Brianmoore... bridge out 30 and 87 means you just connect them together right?? so take out the reley and where pin 30 and 87 sit, you just stick some wire connecting the two???

do he check the fuel at the fuel rail at the same time?? or after??

we already checked for sparks.

Take the fuel pipe off at the fuel rail (not the pipe to the fuel pressure regulator - that's the return line), place the end of the pipe in a container, and bridge the relay's socket with a piece of wire.
Alternatively, just listen for the pump after you've bridged it.

Its under the back seat yes
I doubt you will need to remove the seat to hear it though

Is that with the relay bridged? The whole point of Brian's test is to help find out if it's the relay or the pump...

No kidding lol
The relay is under the bonnet and not on the pump

No; if you bridge the relay under the bonnet, that sends power directly to the pump (ie checks the function of the relay) - if the pump still doesn't make any noise, it's probably dead. Still worth checking power's getting to it though.

& another thought... how old's the car? Ie is it a twin (early) or single pump (late) setup?

Tech 2 i believe will only have 1 pump
Either way if you can't hear the pump when bridging the relay as above, either the pump is knackered or the wiring/power feed/supply is.

Is there fuel coming out of the fuel supply hose to the fuel rail whilst this 'buzzing' is happening?

As Brian said earlier remove the hose from the fuel rail nearest the bulkhead/screen end.

Just a thought has this car got any aftermarket alarms or immobilizers fitted?

Just check if fuel is coming out of the supply house to the rail when the relay is bridged 1st mate.

The reason i asked about an immobilizer/alarm is because some cut the power to the fuel pump when activated and this could be faulty.

You won't find the supply hose where i told you to look as its not there on an M20
Sorry was thinking M30
The supply hose fits onto the fuel rail directly beneath the return hose which is fitted to the fuel regulator at the front of the rail!

Most alarms arm on reconection of the battery.

Most immobilisers that I've come across don't disable the starter motor.

oh ok, so is it still possibly the immobiliser?? cutting off the fuel by not lettingthe fuel pump operate?

if so then the immobiliser needs resetting.. if it helps its an old Clifford jobby??

This threads changed direction considerably!
Check for 12V+ at the + terminal of the ignition coil with the ignition switch on.

1 more way to see if the pump is dead just power the pump with another car battery and some wire then see whats going on
