speedo probs

Hello ive have taken my speedo out cos it been playing up and i found that there is a plug that is not plugged into anything its a small black one which is connected to another small black one which was connected to the big green block does anybody know if this is supposed to be plugged in also cos there is a slot it would fit into. Sorry to sound a bit brainless

but its the first time that i have taken them out and maybe this is why my speedo is not workin.

Yes mate that should be plugged in....the slot should also be green....

ive plugged it back in but speedo still doesnt work

there is still a black female plug there doin nothin though it has nowhere to go

Im listening to the replies you get, Middy, cos my speedo works intermitently. Has been working fine last couple of days but last week when i bought car, sometimes it worked and others it didnt.
One suggestion was that the speedo cable connects to the diff and this connection can corrode. Just an idea, something ive not checked yet

That is also happening on my car, and it is indeed the wire sender plug into the diff. The wires have snapped internally just where they go into the plug, due to constant rocking of the diff.
Went to Wood BMW to get replacement plug, hope it is DIY'able as the original looks a little bit of a permanent fit with no means of rewiring the plugs neatly. Otherswise, it's going to be a DIY crimp job.

The black connector and green block setup is a processed speedo output to feed cruise control / sat-nav / taxi meter / auto-volume ICE. It may just be floating about, but is more likely to have been tied to the factory head unit connector block.

When mine was working intermittantly, it turned out to be a dry joint in the speedo head.
It took about an hour to re-flow the solder on all of the joints.
Also, I seem to recall that one of the connectors inside the head was a bit loose.
Finally, I kinda shimmed up the speedo unit within the head to stop it moving back and forth as the speedo seemed to work if I slammed on the brakes, but stop when I accelerated hard.
For most people though, it seems to be the wiring at the back.

Reflowing the joints solved my intermittent issues too.
Now if only I can find a gear for the odometer ..........
The connector in question is for the ECU, I believe. You will find that it will connect into only one pin (unique connector) of the speedo so little chance of getting it wrong.

i think the loose plug was could be part of the obc loom. most of those are green.
