Hey guys and girls.
Today, i changed down from forth to third at 40mph, then floored it. The usual power ensued, but for a second there was a real boost of power, but then back to usual. i have tried to make it do it again, but to no avail.
just wondering if anyone has any ideas- i.e. fuel etc.
many thanks in advance
Sam

sometimes an engine seems to go faster and smoother for a small time just before it goes bang

M40's do strange things :o . If you want that power again though, floor it in first to about 6k revs, 1'st gear is fast!

This sounds like what you think is normal running is actually running with a fault, and for a short period, the fault cleared.

As above, temporary relief of the symptoms of a fault sound likely - could be something as simple as a fuel filter in need of replacement.

When i first bought mine it used to 'loose power' when you put down your foot, and then gain it again sometimes. It had been standing a while, and with new petrol in it was sorted. Has your car been standing?

Even though im now contradicting myself 1.8's are faster than people make out, can put a smile on your face :)

I drive a 318i every day, and it's adequate. It ain't going to challenge any of the "hotter" stuff out there, but it stays with the normal stuff OK.

Thanks for all ur advice. Although tis quite annoying that so many people rip the m40 engine. Im 18 yrs old, tis my first car and its perfectly adequate! I agree with brianmooooooore on the "temporarily fault free" thing. The car was standing from may til November, with little use. Since then ive done bout 2000miles. ill do an oil and all filters change, see if theres ne improvement.
Cheers again guys

Im 18 with 318i as first car too. Mine stood for a few months like yours and then had this problem after about 1000 miles. It just went in the end when i next filled the tank.

Hey guys and girls.
Problem solved! I knew the exhaust was a bit noisy cos of the baffles (car was standing for months) and this turns out to have restricted power from the engine!
Many thanks for all your help
