Easiest way?
find a quiet straight road. Stop. Rev to 3.5k in 1st, release clutch, immediately apply full throttle.
Two stripes and rapid progress = LSD
one short stripe and one wheel spinning up = open diff.
Well, its more fun that jacks and axle stands

I will second that, I put a 3.9 lsd in my touring one month ago.
I am so happy I did.
And to think it was laying around in my garage for 2 whole years while I neglected my beatiful touring while hooning around in my now sold ( and now badly damaged by the new owner ) Impeza!
In fact, on the night I sold it I told the new early 20's owner " Be careful and get to know the car, start drifting gradually"
Two hours after I sold it the police turned up at my house asking to speak to me!
The car was still reg in my name!
The muppet had gone out and acted silly buggers.
What it is to be young, wish those kind of cars were around then.
My first car was a Mk1 Cortina and I was an ass with that!
Bit off topic,,Sorry TonySR

..you forgot one thing - 'repeat as necessary' !
if it's balanced 'correctly' you'll get two stripes of rubber even with an open diff, believe me, i thought it was my lucky day when it seemed that the 320 that i'd been given for free had a slip diff' but alas, it wasn't so!

So, where on the diff is the 'tag' ?
Toughguych, some people just never listen..
How much is a lsd worth if in good condition etc?

Guys i understand that what you have instructed him to do in order to work out if he has an LSD or not is the fun way but i would like to add that the clutch pack only lasts for about 10 hours of lock and after ten-fifteen years i would save every last min i can. The best way to test is to jack one side, make sure the car wont roll (yoke the wheels) then get a torque wrench on one of the wheel bolts set the wrench at 80lbft and try to rotate the wheel if it clicks before you can rotate the wheel then that's a good clutch if not then game over.

Bit scientific isn't it
Sounds like a good way of doing it though, just as long as it's in neutral and the handbrakes off

cunning idea andrew! i'll have to have a go at that then.
i know i have a 3.91 LSD but it sometimes fails to lock (rarely though) so it would be interesting to know how tired it actually is.
as they're all going to be fairly tired by now, how would be the best way to got about getting one freshened up?
i read something once about using plates from a 2.8i capri LSD rebuild kit as it works out 1/4 the price or something but i don't know more...
also, if i rebuild mine, can the ratio be swapped with bits from a donor open diff or is the LSD crownwheel and pinion different?

Started my driving career on an old nearby wartime airfield in a Mk1 Escort, under my mother's instruction.
Drove home after the lesson, and had the tail out on a particularly tight lefthander on the way home. Pleased to say opposite lock came naturally!
My mother always seemed reluctant to accompany me after that!

"read something once about using plates from a 2.8i capri LSD rebuild kit as it works out 1/4 the price or something but i don't know more... "
Must have read that a long time ago...
Capri Lsd's are going for stupid money...
mainly cos mk1 and mk2 escorts never had them
Try £250-£400!!!

Is Brianmoooore older than we thought? LOL!

The airfield was ex wartime - not me! Mk 1 Escort dates me a bit though.

i started my driving career in a mk2 escort and moved on to mk1's and a 105e anglebox among others (best being a MK2 RS2000 X-Pack)

and i'm only 26
re the capri diff, as far as i can remember the capri uses the same plates as a E30 diff but has twice as many. so a capri rebuild kit will do 2 E30 diffs.
escorts did have LSD's but only very rarely on RS models

Check out the price of the Capri lsd axle in this listing...
Standard axles fetch £20-£30... subtract that to reflect the price of the lsd minus the casing. £420/ £430?
SToooooooooooooooppppppppppppppiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiidddddddddddddddd!!!

what listing is that?
anyway, it's the rebuild parts i'm after / referring to. if i did have a need for a ford LSD, i'd stump up the extra money and get a brand new quaife not a 20 year old (and also in need of a rebuild) ford one

quaife are no where near as good as a conventional Clutch type LSD.
No one who races cars would fit a ATB Quaife diff.

What about those Kaaz jobs? They've got them at Driftworks and rallynuts.com, but they're 900 bones though

Do a search mate, its been talked to death on here. There should be a few threads where i and others have mentioned the problems with the ATB quaife diffs.
