e36 e30 m42 engines?

hello, not long ago bought a e30 318is. Basically decided to put a decent engine in it as the one i got is pretty shagged.
I ordered a m42 from what i thought was an E30 (i defiantely asked for that). When taking stock of the engine i noticed the reciept stated 1995 e36 318is m42engine.

i done a little search to see if i can fit it anyways but cant really find the answers i 'm looking for...

How simple is it to fit this newer engine into the e30?
will i need to retain any parts from the old engine?
Could i use all the older engines wiring/ecu or does the new wiring plug into everything on the E30 no hassle?
Would any changes need to be done to the ecu?
Would the transmission from the E30 fit onto this new engine?
and if anyone knows of any other complications about this swap i'd appreaciate the info.

Thanks for any help. But i'd need to make a decision to whether i'm gonna bother keeping this one or return to sender!

I've seen a thread on this a while ago, pretty sure it's a pain in the butt to do.

Might be wrong tho'

Did you buy the engine from a breakers?? If so, you say

yeh, got it from the breakers FAB. If it looks like too much of a pig to fit then i'll give them a ring soon as. hopefully they'll have an e30 one kickin about.

i thought the ealry e36 318is lump was identical to the e30 M42 lump

They look identical and both model require the same parts for a rebuild

to fit the e36 lump into an e30 you have to change the sump, change the rocker cover and change the exhaust manifold and then remove the knock sensors, and use the e30 engine mounts, then simply use the existing wiring loom - not to difficult if you have an e30 engine

The inlet manifold is different too, the knock sensor could just be disconnected rather than removed no ?
