umm silly question time, do you notice the leak after a run in the wet? or when the car is stood?

I had this problem turned out I had a hole under th wheel arch and driving in the wet kicked the water up and in the hole!

Does it only happen after its rained?

I say this because mine was fine in the rain, but I noticed the puddle had appeared in the summer (after a very long hot and dry spell) and also after it had been locked in my mates workshop for a week.

It was condensation on the inside of the rear quarter collecting in the rear well. The rubber bung in the bottom does have a hole to let water out, but this had become blocked.

that is what happened with mine. no leak just condensation on the boot lid. I popped it one day to find the lid was covered in water droplets. no fix really unless your willing to put insulation on the lid.

Sunroof drain?? I think the pipe runs down into the rear quarter and often comes away from the bit of plastic that directs the water outside through the vent in the quarter panel.

Exactly the same as mine, boot lids covered, seems too much water for condensation mind. Can't seem to find any wet bits of trim though where it runs down?

Remove the boot lining (passenger side) and it should be right in front of you.

You'll find another one on the driver's side.
Check the inner arches carefully, especially the right hand one. Any bubbling of the paint is a rust hole.

Brian im amazed at how helpfull and knowledgeable you are when it comes to E30's. Also that you follow through peoples problems usually untill they fix them, eliminating one thing at a time. Just thought i should say what an excellent zoner you are, not that im sure you dont know it :) . (no im not drunk, just reading through a lot of the tech help posts!)

Another often overlooked source of leaks are the hockey stick trims on the rear pillars. The plastic clips that hold these in place can crack and leak water into the boot.

There is actually a hole there, near the front where there is a join. The hole is formed by a small crease it the lower part of the metal where it overlaps, but is usually blocked by sealant.

have a look under the wheel arch at the plastic inner arch that covers the outside of where you saying. if the holes are not sealed then water will get in there as the wheel splashes straight on to it. and if the drain plug is naff then it will collect and stay there for a very long time.
