1991 316i M40 engine (137k)

Drove to London today (40 miles) - didnt miss a beat. Drove back this evening at same speed - sitting at 72 on motorway and it began to hesitate, in a way that I can only describe like it was not getting constant fuel supply or maybe a missfire.

The nose went down slightly when it was doing this so it obviously lost acceleration, but kept picking up and repeating on and off for about 10 miles.

Once off the motorway it was fine - revved up to 4k without any problem.

Only other trouble Im having is taht it judders at 2k rpm (Throttle position sensor issues I presume).

Since getting it I have:

Replaced: ICV, Cambelt, Dizzy cap, Spark plugs, Inlet manifold gaskets, AFM, blue temp sensor.

Any ideas gratefully received.

I did take it off to do the cambelt recently, but why do you reckon that?

Because its easier to do it when the timing belt is being changed, so you should have done it at the same time because there only £20 and saves you having to strip it down again.

If it is a misfire i'd start with the HT leads.

As for the judder at 2k rpm and possibly at 70 odd could be worn springs in the clutch plate.
When it does it on the motorway at a guess it dosen't do it while your going up hill, only on level ground while holding a constant speed.
You'll probably find it does it at any speed just as long as you hold a constant RPM. Easiest way is to let it idle along in second once warmed up and then it will "kangeroo"

If it does the only cure is a new clutch plate even if its got tons of wear left in it. Its a major pain just to replace 1 or 2 worn springs.

The only time it judders is at 2000rpm when I am accelerating ever so slightly. It is fine in all other situations apart from this new Motorway business. Yesterday on the motorway I tried decellerating and then accelerating with my foot to the floor, its still juddered. Then when it had stopped doing this I repeated my actions and it responded normally.

After driving for an hour or so and then start stop driving, It makes some horrible banging and crashing noises as I pull away. Im guessing this may be a knackered clutch which might tie in with what you are saying.
