E30 Zone

ian just changed our 316i cylinder head for a 318i cylinder head.

why do we now squeak??? would this be the reprofiled cam bedding in (oh yeah put one of them in as well!!)

had the same on the sierra (now off to be a turbo with new owners ) it went away after 150 miles.

just been out in it and the poor thing doesn't seem to like it.
stalled 4 times, smells really bad, starts to really scream at us at around 3000 revs where it used to be around 5000.
can anyone suggest anything that would fix it?? suggestions of things to check would be good too.

Check and double check the cambelt timing (and tension) would be the first on my list.
Idle may be a bit unstable for a while if the battery has been disconnected.

how would you check the timing belt??
do you need a flashy light thing??
we don't have one of them.

Timing marks on the top and bottom belt pulleys. You must have used them when you put the belt on after the head change.

i dont think he did that. he's now trying to justify not checking it.

i'll try to get him to check it tomorrow (when the light has returned!)

How can you possibly change a cylinder head without referring to the timing marks. Either the factory ones, or ones tippexed on yourself??

I think that's the root of the problem found...

Sounds like it might be a miracle it runs at all!

he says he lined up the marks on the case and the top of the belt.

all this because i don't know anything about my car.

i think on the crank its a notch in the front crank seal housing and arrow on the pulley and on the top a line on the head if i remember right, cant see mark on the crank without the V pulley off

That sounds about right, but the marks have to be spot on. One tooth out is not close enough!
How did Ian tension the belt, by the way?

he put it on the cog, did the squeezy test, measured it, did the sqeezy test again.

he's gonna take it to the garage tomorrow cos he's now feeling really bad cos it sounds lke he's done something bad.

what happens if you don't plug the afm back in once youve changed a cylinder head?
answer ian is a d1ck hed and the fookin car wont work properly

another question.
what happens when ian realises that he hasn't pluged the afm back in, then plugs it back in and go's for a blat in his (or bultjeboo's as they keep reminding him) car as a celebration of idiocy?
it all works fine and he suprises boo when he picks her up in about an hour!

is it just me or am i (ian) a total arsehole?

so the cause of the problem was the afm not plugged in
