Danny hi m8 done that today with mine. yes there is a lamp at the rear of the unit that works like the rest of the car lamps "dims" you will need to get to the rear of the OBC and then have a pair of long nosed pliers. the lamp is just about in the middle of the unit and is a twist fit.
hope this helps chris.

you can geyt to the back from the glove box, undo it and let it drop down. remove the R/H trim and you will have access to the rear of the unit, the lamp is recceced hense the need for the pliers.

If you need to change the backlight for the LCD.....
you can undo the two top and bottom screws in the dash trim panel that houses the OBC. pull it out just enough where you can see the side of the OBC on the passenger side. You will see there is a white square that houses the light board. The trim panel blocks you from being able to simple pull it out. With a Drummel, you can shave a section of the trim panel. This allows you easy access to this light board any time you need to change it......

This lights up the buttons, for the display there is a white "light bar" as robmpulse has described, easier to undo the 4 screws to remove the unit tho!

You can remove the light bar and take it to someone like maplins and they will solder in new bulbs, 5v each i think or BMW will charge lots more to replace them......
Do a serch and you'll find the answer, it was discussed very recently.........

Had same problem on both my E30 and E24. Went mad and bought 6 bulbs from Maplins @ 28p each, plus vat and delivery, soldered in 2 bulbs per car, problem solved, and 2 spare bulbs if the replacements don't last 20 years, like the originals!!
