After having my battery disconnected for a couple of weeks the oil light on my check control panel won't go out. I know these things are tempermental at the best of times but has anyone any suggestions how to sort it? I've done all the obvious things & it's getting annoying!

take it you've checked the wire down to the sensor?
can often get bumped when working in the engine bay

I checked the wire and sensor even though I haven't been working on it, I just disconnected the battery for when I was on holiday. I'll try disconnecting it again and see if that sorts it out.

There is a sensor in the sump I think which tends to play up. OR you could do what someone had done to a 325i I once owned and take the light out with a dart! it still annoys me to this day.

I know this is very obvious, but just to check - you did check the oil-level with the dipstick didn't you? I've done stuff like that before - suspected the whole check system was knackered before I realised that a brake light was actually out. But then I'm a t$%t, and you're probably not.

is it below half-way on the dipstick?

If so, if I reconnect the battery and the car is not on the level, the check computer decides the oil level is too low, and stays that way for days, even if after that it is parked on the level.
