your 3.9 should be fine. however if you really wanna be hardcore it depends on the track. if the track is short and twisty with short strights then use a 4.1 which will give you decent acceleration up through the gears but lower your top end slighty. lowering the top end wont be a problem as you wont see it and a track like this.
if its a track with long staights then go for a 3.73 or a 3.64. while acceleration up through the gears will suffer slightly this will up your top end a small bit.
I use to do this (change diffs as per track) when I tracked my m3. However in my case I was going from 3.25 to 3.91 for the short stuff, then to 3.64 for mid range tracks or back to 3.15 for the long striaght ones.
hope that helps.

Cheers bud
The track is tight and twisty i can only hit 115mph on the longest straight its chicane heaven left right, right left it never ends major tyre eater.
So you say my 325ise has an LSD from factory? If so hows best to find out?
Any ideas on some good shocks? I have gaz adjustables on the rear of my 318i and found them ok but cant seem to find fronts at a reasonable price any advice appreciated.
Mant thanks

not sure if your se has lsd as standard. 2 ways to check - light up the back wheels and if you get 2 black tyre marks then its lsd. also jack up the rear of the car with both wheels off the ground. turn one of the wheels and if the other turns in same direction its lsd. your diff will also have a tag attached to it which if it begins with S means its lsd. the nos following the S are the ratio i.e S391 = 3.91 lsd.
shocks for track use should be coilovers - leda etc are all very good.

I've just come back from a long weekend at the Nurburgring and I'm very happy with the way my Eibach pro-kit springs ans Koni adjustable shocks performed on track.
Minimal body roll and seemingly endless grip
Cheers,

If your tires aren't wearing evenly (only the inside or outside edge is worn) then it is a camber angle and/or tire pressure problem not a diff problem.
