E30 Zone

Can someone tell me where the fuel pump is on my E30 Touring?

The Haynes manual says it's either in the boot or under the rear seats but a quick look suggests finding out which may be a bit of an effort.

So I though the kind folks of the E30 Zone might be able to help

You need to take off the seat squabs, pull the carpet from under the seat, and undo the hex screws that hold the black rail to the body. Under this you should see some oval ish black panels. under one of them ( not sure if there's 2 or not) is the pump. I think its on the RHS??

You may not need to take the rail off.. I can't remember!!

The seat mounting rail just prevents the pump being removed.
When my pump started failing last August in the middle of France, and I had to remove it frequently, as well as keeping the seats in place, I just had to trim about 1/4" off the rail in the appropriate place.

just changed mine yesterday,i was having the same problems as you brian,easy 10 minute job,even though i was fitting an escort cosworth one in its place.

The pumps works, it's just that the gauge doesn't It shows a random amount of fuel and the light has a mind of it's own too

Had a look at it this evening and unplugging the plug made the gauge stop working. Plugged it back in and jiggled the pump about a bit in case the floater thingy was stuck and it now seems to be showing roughly the right amount.

I won't really know if it's fixed until I've driven it about a bit and being lpg I don't use petrol much anyway.

Unscrew the four small nuts on the top of the fuel pump, and the fuel level sender just lifts straight up and out.
It's an oval aluminium tube with all the works inside, and is not intended to be takken apart, or at least, back together afterwards.
If there's any quantity of fuel in the tank it will piddle petrol out of a small hole at the bottom, so have a container handy.

Cheers Brian Thanks to the earlier help I'd essentially done what you've suggested I didn't know about the risk of fuel leaking but there's never more than about a tenners worth of fuel in the tank, as the damned thing leaks (which makes having no gauge even more annoying).

My wife's 325 touring (also our "main" car) runs on LPG as well, so my tank's usually close to empty as well. Don't let it get too empty or the pump may start drawing air and damage itself.
Keep meaning to fit a dashboard switch to kill the pump. Only needs to be on for first start of the day and when running out of LPG is imminent.

Actually, the car sometimes has another problem (one of many - lol). When switching from lpg to petrol it can run quite poorly for as much as a couple of minutes. I've not got my head around why but have thought maybe that the level of advance on gas screws the car up when switching back to petrol or that the fuel pump is a bit bit feeble until it warms up?? I really dunno but it is only a problem very occasionally as I rarely run out of gas

Thanks for the advice about not running too low on petrol. I actually ran out completelyon Wednesday, which is when I decided to post this thread and get off my fat @rse and fix the damn thing

The injectors gum up a bit when running on gas and take a little while to clean up.
