316i idling problem...

Hi,

I appear to have a problem with my 90' 316iA idling.

When starting from cold, providing you don't touch the throttle pedal, it idles OK. However, the minute you touch the throttle, ie when reversing out of the drive in the morning etc the revs drop right down and the engine chugs away and tries to keep going.

When warm this problem goes away.

I've recently cleaned the idle stabilisation valve, the throttle housing and it's had new plugs, distributor cap and rotor arm.

I would normally expect this to be a problem with the cold start valve but there doesn't seem to be one on the M40.

Any idea's...

Check the air trunking from air flow meter to throttle body. This may well be a leak.

Sometimes the spring in the afm becomes weak with use and age. There are ways of winding this on, but check everything else first. Especially the rubber for leaks!

I had this on the 316i I have recently gained... My rubber boot had 5 big rips in it. I replaced it with a loose fitting ford item to get home. It improve the initial idle, but is was cack after a bit of throttle. A new rubber boot and the idle is spot on.

im having the same problem, but mine starts chugging on start up so i give it a little rev and when it calms downit idles about 1300rpm. and gradually drops. its stinks of fuel as well from the exhaust.
