my mate has a 4 door 316, and it is aparrent that the valve clearances need doing. however, we did the valve clearances and there is still a clatter. could the camshaft be knackered? i always thought M10s were bulletproof..... this one goes allright but its clattery... anyone got any ideas

I had one like this, put it down to chain/tensioner.
Instead of spending the money on this though I just bought a scabby old 325 and swapped the important bits over

yeah but my mate is poor and cant afford the fuel on a 325 or similar. its an allright car apart from this... needs some tidying but then again most cars do. so it could be the tensioner? i'll look into that side of things cheers mate....

Thats what I thought until I started getting MORE mpg out of the 2.5
It did have one of those Weber "on/off" carbs though

hmm yeah....
i thought the timing chains on these and M30s were meant to last the life of the car though. isnt it possible to join the chains together and feed the new one through when the tensioner is off?
