E30 Zone

My drivers window winds down about an inch and a half, and then the winder gets very hard to turn. If you carry on winding it, it makes a loud click-click sound. I have on one occasion managed to get it wound down after we had had quite a bit of rain, but other than that, I'm pretty clueless. Any help...please!

What age of car? Completely different mechanism before/after April '88.

It's a 1990 318i.

These mechanisms are usually reliable and don't give problems.
A bit of silicon grease in the window channels can work wonders, and is usually the only maintenance they need.
Wonder if the leveling adjustment has come loose, or one of the metal clips at the glass base has come off? In the bit of movement you get, does it go up and down level, or does it appear to be working from the front/back only?

I tried spraying WD40 in the window channels, and it worked for an hour or so, then went back to what it is now. I think I need to get hold of some silicon grease and give it a try. Any specific kind of silicon grease I should look out for?

The stuff for wheel bearings is what i used to use. Cant remember what its called. WD40 is a waste of time for that

Best bet is to get the door card off and see whats going on in there

Would Red Rubber grease suffice, or is silicon grease the best stuff to use?
I have had a look inside the door before, and everything seemed to be fine - just the window glass sticks when it gets to a certain point...then won't go any further unless forced.
