E30 Zone

Im having my car re-sprayed in the very near future and it needs a little welding on the shuttle. just wondered what i would need to do to stop things going bang.

is it just a case of removing the batteryconnections? or is it ECU out?

Pesonally I have welded an E30 with just the battery disconnected, just on the wings, and it worked fine afterwards. However I'd say whip out the ECU if you can remember as if your having a bad day/ week it'll probably go haywire. Apart from that just make sure there is nothing to catchfire on the otherside of the panel to be welded

I've never disconnected the battery or ECU or anything else on an E30, whether I've been welding, working on the electrics or anything else.
Just give a bit of thought where the return current from your welder earth clamp is going to run, and to what might be inflammable on the other side of where you're welding.

Batteries dont need disconecting. You hear all these horror stories of wiring looms being burnt out and ECU's needing replacing, if you put the earth in the right place then you will not have any problems
I work on brand new commercial vehicles and do a lot of welding, most companies insist that a surge protector is used across the batteries while welding is carried out to protect the ECU, im that confident these are unnecessary I dont even own one. But if the customer insists, I will use one, but only if they provide it of course

sound, so where is a good place for the earth return to go if the scuttle is being welded? i'm not welding it one of my mates whos a TIG welder at works gonna do it for me.
