OEM MAF Upgrade?

Hi everyone, this is my first post and I'm wondering if anyone can help me out with something...

I have recently removed and cracked open my air flow meter in an attempt to fix rich running (having checked everything else), and I am left with two questions:

1. Is the AFM set at the factory to run with the minimum spring tension possible (i.e. one notch further anticlockwise on the toothed wheel and the vane no longer goes back to its stop properly)? Unfortunately my car appears to have suffered modification at the hands of some right egits in the past so I wouldn't be at all surprised if someone has done this in an attempt to richen the mixture as much as possible (no O2 sensor to correct it on my car!).

If this minimum tension setting is indeed wrong I'd be tempted to acquire a CO meter to set the AFM up correctly again. However, I have a second option that leads to question two:
2. It appears that the stock AFM is no longer available from the dealer network (BMW# 13.62.1.286.615/Bosch 0 280 202 082). Instead they offer a 'Mass Air Flow Sensor', BMW# 13.62.7.547.977. My question is: has anyone ever seen this particular part? Am I interpreting this correctly in thinking that this is an OEM drop-in replacement that upgrades from the vane-type air measurement to a hot wire type? Just for reference, the EPC suggests that this part is only used in this application, as an AFM replacement on M20 engined cars (various E30s, Z1 and some E34 525is).

As I'm not keen on modifying a MAF from a different car to work with my E30, this may represent a simple yet effective performance upgrade, though no doubt an expensive one :roll:

Anyway, any comments or suggestions would be most appreciated...

I hope so because this would solve a lot of probems on my MAF conversion.

Unless the new ETK shows different results or you get a different result if you phone the dealer then im a bit confused. I just looked on my ETK and the only air flow meter is the same kind that we all put up with, no hot wire part i can see. Is this what you meant, or did you mean you phoned the dealer and they said it had been replaced?

Dont get excited guys, its an exchange AFM. I phoned the dealer and asked him to pull up the diagram, its not a MAF.

This came just from the ETK mate, I think as there's some interest and confusion surrounding this I'll take a trip to the dealer soon and see what I can discover; the parts guy at my local one is pretty safe so with a bit of luck I can get to the bottom of this!

In case it's different, I'm looking at the 08/2004 ETK with a 1/2005 CD. I've just double checked my original results and noticed that it can throw up a variety of part numbers for the original AFM:
My car (March '89 325i Coupe) - 13.62.1.286.615
325i Touring of same vintage - 13.62.1.710.543
Cars with 320i version of M20 - 13.62.1.710.539

Incidentally, the touring part shows as available for mine for 'heavy duty' use. I guess that these parts are all physically indentical, differing only in how they were calibrated at the factory. This mass air sensor I'm seeing is only offered as a swap for the first on the list (.615).

Can anyone replicate these results or am I just being daft? :mad:

If someone can confirm, I will research this matter further...

Thanks for looking into it dude. Guess it's back to trying to sort out my AFM then :(
