My diff is in need of replacing on my 1.8i. I would like to upgrade to a lsd however i know that the smaller cased lsd's are rare. I would like to know how difficult it is to fit the larger type and how to shorten the prop shaft so it would fit?

I pulled my small case 4:1 and fitted a large case 3.91:1 LSD, no changes were necessary... Straight swap with a bit of jiggling.

Hello and Welcome to the Zone mate
It's a simple straight swap geeze, just chuck it on and go drifting

The prop does need to be shortened as the large case diff input flange sits closer to the front of the car.
You'd need to remove the exhaust and heatshields, to the rear of the prop centre bearing there is a threaded collar that needs to be loosened. This allows the rear half of the prop to slide forward in effect shortening the prop to allow the larger diff to fit.
Don't forget to tighten it back up afterwards, tight but not too tight.
A large case 3.91 diff from a facelift 325i sport would be ideal.
Cheers,
