Fuel problem

Hi all, I seem to have a problem with fuel gauge or possibly something else. The reading on the gauge sometimes takes a while to come up (when half full), then to day (and once before) as soon as my fuel light comes on the car struggles to start (as if there was no fuel). my girl friend was using the car when this happened she managed to start the car and keep it running and drive to a petrol station (she mentioned the light went out after awhile and the car seemed to be running ok). What do you think the cause of my problem could be. I cant smell petrol so i dont think it has a leak, but where should i look just in case. I dont think its the fuel pump as the car runs fine. Do the sensors effect the running of the car, could it be the relay. Thanks for ideas or pointers.

First thing u have to do is not to give ur car to ur girlfriend BIG mistake trust me on this...u have to check ur fuel level sender its located under the back seat some times the floater stucks thats why u dont have good readings u have to remove the black metal plate then the 3 cable socket and the 4 8mm nuts after this remove the sender gently connect it again turn on the ignition swich an turn the sender up side down and upwars again for acouple of times while loking at ur instrument(fuel gauge not the other one...)to see if it coresponds to the movement u do whith the sender. If not replace the sender or try to open it and repair it (works most of the times if u r avarage skilled) good luck mate
