325i Auto Engine over-revving issue

Hi all, I am having some problems with my 89 325i Convertible. The car has been little used this year and since getting her out a few days ago, I have been having issues.

The car starts, but seems to be idling a bit short on revs. It will sit quite happily and then all of a sudden the revs shoot up to 2.5k and bounce off that repeatedly. The only way to stop that is to turn it off. The car will then not restart for some time after. When she restarts, the same thing seems to happen again a short time after.

I cleaned the ICV valve last night and tried driving a short distance just now. The car died completely and again wouldn't restart. Eventually I got her going and she was revving all over the shop before eventually settling enough to try and get back home. She wasn't happy, nearly cutting out again several times, but made it back. But as I pulled up I got the rev surge issue again. There was a strong fuel smell after I turned her off.

I have replaced the fuel pump, HT Leads and and spark plugs but now lost for ideas. I have had prior issues with cold starting, not wanting to run and the fuel pump seemed to fix that.

Anyone have any suggestions out there.

Many thanks

Most likely thing is an air leak on the induction side. Check for split hoses.
