Clunking Noise from Rear

First of all - just to clarify - I have already searched for this problem as know it has come up a lot on the zone already. So I've done my research. However there are a few details with my particular issue which might help people point me in the right direction...

I have 1988 320i automatic which, when I engaged drive or reverse from neutral would lurch forwards or backwards in quite a harsh manner. I have already had the subframe and control arm bushings replaced so had a feeling this might be the differential bushing.

I replaced the diff bushing last weekend with a Polyflex polyurethane set and, although i think it has improved the problem slightly, it now seems to have created a different problem! When accelerating or decelerating in a spirited manner on the motorway (over 50mph mostly) i hear and feel a clunk from the rear of the car which I'm pretty sure was not there before.

It only happens when putting my foot on or off the accelerator pedal... and every now and again when the car changes gear.

So my thinking is this could be the trailing arm bushings seeing as they have not been changed yet.

Or, perhaps as I have installed a stiffer bushing compared to the oem, I've exposed a problem with the diff - perhaps the mounting bolts are loose or worse the mount is cracked... allowing the diff to rock back and forth.

Anyway - I can't get under the car for a while now but can't stop thinking about it - so was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the matter? Thanks!

What's the best way to check this - just give it a bit of a push and pull from underneath and see if I can feel any movement?

I suppose thats one way but I think it`s best done from the underside , I`m sure somebody will be along soon to put things right.
