It could just be a kanckered tensioner. I'm sure someone more qualified will be along shortly...

There is a heat sheild. It covers the ignition wires that run down the side of the head.

I don't think tensioners are expensive at all, something like Ԛ£35 according to the 318is bible:

i replaced my tensioner about 3 months ago and it made a hell of a difference.Cost me 36 quid and the engine was so much quieter afterwards.Plus it onlt takes five minutes to fit....

thanks to all

Glad to hear it was something simple.

But as Demlotcrew said, now go check the metal heatshield fitted around the HT cables, running along the side of the head. They ALWAYS crack through at the bolt holes, eventually you will have another annoying rattle! New shield is about Ԛ£3 from the dealer if required.

Took me ages to find this rattle on my iS last year....

 hey mark just checked that heat shield(hadnt noticed it before) and it seems to be fine ,looks pretty new ,maybe the old guy that had it before me got it changed !! another wee problem i have is that im missing a center for one of my alloys, their the standard 15" cross spoke type, ive looked every where all the local scrappers and still no luck,i just cant bring my self round to paying 40quid for one from the local dealer...any ideas anyone ? or should i just do a bit of extra O.T,grit my teeth and buy one !! Same problem here with the rattle from the front, noticed the heat shield too, what a rubbish design! and it's wafer thin. I've got the tensioner on order and I'll purchase a new shield also, just in case.

Just thought I would post up to say thanks for this info.
