Was working on the car during the week and had it up on ramps at the front to check underneath for MOT. Has been up there for about 4 days (on front ramps). Noticed yesturday that there was a large oil stain under the car. Investigated this morning and its coming out of a small slit at the base of the gearbox bellhousing/engine block join. There is now a lot of oil on the floor and I am a little concerned. Has anyone had this happen to them?? any ideas what has happened? Is it something to do with the car bing up on ramps cause I don't remember it losing oil when it was on the flat.

Cheers,
Andy

If it's black oil (most probable) then it's engine oil leaking past the rear crank seal. Gearbox and flywheel off job to change it, but as long as it diesn't get onto the clutch friction plate, won't cause any serious problems.
Having the car up at the front has put the oil level above the bottom of the seal and highlighted the failing seal.
If this is a M20 engine, and you can keep it below about two seperate oil leaks somewhere at any one time, then you are doing well.
Just think of it as "marking its teritory".

Yeah it is nice and black. Cheers - was getting worried for a minute. I think the clutch is going but it ain't finished yet. When it comes round to doing that I do the crankcase oil seal at the same time. Thats one less thing to be worried about at least.

The propshaft rubber joint has started to disintegrate. Is it as difficult to change as the haynes book suggests. Do you really have to remove the prop completly to get it out and replace it???

Sorry for all the questions only got the car last week. On the whole its fine just got a few things that need sorting.

Cheers

Don't have to take the prop right off, but you have to remove the covers that box in the prop ang get at the centre bearing and sleeve nut.
Helps if the exhaust is off as well.
There's no point in waiting till the clutch dies if you're sure it's dying. You'll be unlikely to ever wear out its replacement.
Sounds like it would be a good idea to do all three jobs at the same time.
