Drill the thermostat?

Hi,
My new Febi Thermostat has just arrived and I’ve been reading that I should drill a 3mm hole in the top. Is this necessary or not?

I have a standard stat in mine with 3 small holes drilled in it but that's simply to help the car cope in traffic during the summer as it's an m30b35 converted car so I did this to take the pressure off the electric fan a tad.
And it's garaged all winter so needing the heat build up in the colder weather doesn't matter.

It will aid the bleeding of air out of the system, but that's not a major problem if the correct procedure is followed. Certainly not worth risking your engine being over cooled at idle for.
There's a popular misconception that an engine should be run cool.
This is completely wrong. An engine runs more efficiently the hotter it gets. The limiting factor is eliminating the possibility of local boiling in the engine, usually around the exhaust valve area, and this is achieved by a combination of good head design, running the system under as high a pressure as practical, and choosing a thermostat temperature to suit.
