And it works? Fuel feed, where it enters the engine compartment, should be the lower pipe (and on a four pot, go to the filter), and the silver pipe is the feed on BMW engines. Black is the return from the FPR.

I worked out the feed being the lower one, then thought the black leading to the fpr meant that was the feed but I'm obviously wrong! Thankyou for clarifying, I only connected them up last night, didn't get it running as have a few more questions...

I have a purple/black and a red/yellow wire taped together coming from starter motor and the plastic box of wires that sit in front of the coolant pipe rail thing.. where should that go please?

Thanks Brian, I should always wait for your replies rather than guessing :o: haha!

Black pipe does come from the FPR, but that's the return. The pump feeds direct to the fuel rail, and the FPR works by bleeding off the excess pressure, not regulating it as it goes into the rail.
Can't think of any purple/black that should be in a M42 engine loom, and the only red/yellow should be the one from the DME relay to pin 20 of the C101 for ABS.
Only wires to the starter motor, apart from the big one from the battery, and the slightly smaller one to the alternator, should be the black/yellow wire from the start position of the ignition switch, and the black/green that goes to one side of the coils of unloader relays K5 and K7.

Thankyou so much for clarifying! Got to the bottom of it now, took all the tape off and those two wires had been added on and presumably the previous car the engine was in had a start button so those two wires just had to be joined up! Just been to get some fresh fuel and hoping she should run tonight!
